Sotheby’s International Realty: A Community Partner

In addition to the important causes that our offices support in their local communities, Sotheby's International Realty, Inc. supports Conservation International, a global organization working to conserve the Earth's biodiversity and to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature. Our agents and offices have already started protecting precious rainforest acres and the species they contain through Conservation International's "Protect an Acre" program. With every real estate transaction, we donate a portion of the proceeds of our commissions to this innovative guardian of more than 200 million acres of land and marine environments. By 2010, CI will have saved more than 175,000 species of plants and animals.

The burning and clearing of the world's rich ecosystems emits at least 20% of the greenhouse gases that cause climate change-more than cars, trucks and airplanes combined. Thanks to the work and science of Conservation International, we understand that protecting acres of rainforest through sustainable conservation is a relatively quick and cost-effective way to reduce climate change, and a sensible way for organizations like ours to help. In addition, we're committed to evaluating our practices, and working to decrease energy use and reduce waste. This will take time and always be a work in progress, but every small step will hopefully lead to more meaningful change.

Here are some of the initial actions we're taking:

We at Sothebys International Realty are committed to reducing our environmental impact and with each transaction, we make it possible for our clients to participate in our efforts as efforts to conserve 143 million acres of tropical rainforest - the equivalent of taking 10 million cars off the road.
